D. Aurelio Pérez Gómez (Barriomartín, Soria, 1935). He is one the most representative figures among the Spanish field naturalists in the last fifty years. A son of peasants and cattle-raisers, he had to give up schooling when he was 10 to become the shepherd of a herd of 250 sheep. He drove mares from his birth-place village to Villanueva del Fresno (Badajoz), thereby becoming a traditional nomadic herdsmen (a transhumante). He had his first encounters with the wolf while grazing sheep in Badajoz province.

He worked in farming and building until, through a relative working in Barajas Airport of Madrid, he met Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente. This is when he began his career as a professional falconer, devoted to the control of birds affecting air traffic in several Madrid and Barcelona airports.

Aurelio is credited with a remarkable career as an environmental instructor through his collaboration in the making of nature documentaries and in environmental education centres. He coordinated the team of naturalists involved in the TV series El hombre y la Tierra (1974-1980), directed by Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente. In fact he was the key-man in filming a great deal of the most renowned sequences of this mythical series.

He also participated as a nature consultant in well-known movies such as those directed by Mario Camus (Los Santos Inocentes, La Forja de un Rebelde and Sombras después de una Batalla), or Francisco Reguerio (Madre Gilda), where he even succeeded in training a flock of jackdaws (Corvus monedula) and a red-billed chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax). With regards to fauna documentaries we must also mention his participation in the TVE series directed by Joaquín Araújo (Silencio Roto, La Nave Tierra y Ciencia y Vida), and in other productions such as that of the Compañía de Inventarios Naturales (El Universo Escondido, El Paraíso Encontrado), Ecofor (Osos y Madroños) and that of the film-maker and photographer Joaquín Gutiérrez Acha (El Latido del Bosque, Las Montañas del Lobo).

A committed environmentalist, he always addresses his speech to the youth. In this respect, his remarkable contribution to the creation and working of Environmental Education Centres (Centro Cañada Real, in Madrid, Centro de Educación Ambiental de Riopar, in the Albacete province, Centro El Vado de los Fresnos, in the Ávila province) is noteworthy.

An excellent conversationalist and extraordinary communicator, he has lectured all over the country and has been granted awards and homage in all the Spanish Autonomous Communities. He is co-author of the Environment Ministry and FIDA’s Manual para el Manejo de Animales Heridos. In acknowledgement to his career, both as a naturalist and as a man who has led a remarkable life, the FIDA foundation has recently published his memoires.

D. Rodrigo García-Siguero (Madrid, 1976) has ample experience in raptor species management at different levels. He is an active falconer who has practised both high-flight and low-flight falconry (goshawks for hunting hares and falcons for partridges) for a long period of time. His birds have won several championships, and he usually appears among the ten best falconers in the country. Recently he has added a male Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos daphanea) to his bird collection.

He has used a wide variety of bird species in public flight exhibitions. He began as a Jesús Ayala disciple, first in Tenerife (Águilas del Teide Park) and then in the Zoo-Aquarium of Madrid. He has been the head of the birds of prey training team at the Madrid Zoo for 5 years (2002-2007).

He has also succeeded in breeding species such as the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus brookei) in captivity. Recently he has been named Head of Bird Management in the Madrid Autonomous Community’s programme for the breeding and reintroduction of large raptor species, which is led by GREFA. These birds include the large Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti), Bonelli’s Eagle (Hieraetus fasciatus) and the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), and the carrion eaters Griffon (Gyps fulvus), Monk or Black Vulture (Aegypius monachus) and Egyptian Vulture (Neophron pernocpterus).

Furthermore he is engaged in population control programmes for pigeon and other locally harmful species.
